Our 1920s bungalow near downtown finally had the moment every old house owner dreads, the kitchen sink backed up and then the upstairs toilet started gurgling like it was possessed. I tried the usual snake and drain cleaner, which of course did nothing except make me smell like a chemical factory. Called two plumbers, one wanted a diagnostic fee just to show up and the other couldn't come for five days. In a panic I ended up on

Still, I'd rather hear from actual neighbors than just a website. Has anyone used a plumber around here who actually explains what's wrong instead of just quoting a huge number and running? We're probably looking at replacing a section of pipe under the house and I'm dreading the cost. Any tips on what to ask before they start cutting into walls would be great because I'm flying blind here.
